What was a typical work day like before the corona crisis?
No two days were ever the same, it varied from day to day. I could be analysing financial transactions, managing the control environment, ensuring accuracy of the books, maintaining the integrity of our accounting records or dealing with payroll enquiries. Other days I spend training and managing staff.
When the outbreak started, what was your initial reaction?
My initial reaction was one of unbelief and quickly changed to uncertainty and confusion.
What impact did this have on your day job and how did you adapt?
My day job changed drastically. No more commuting, face-to face contact was completely eradicated which in turn meant less interaction, reducing collaboration and sharing of ideas. Working from home however made me more innovative and birthed new ways of communicating. With two little ones at home, I have had to adapt by setting daily routines while staying focused and managing my workload and deadlines.
What are the big challenges you have faced / are facing as the pandemic continues?
The drawbacks are less interaction with colleagues and to also ensure work-life balance is maintained.
How have you kept going through the tough times?
Setting a realistic plan and being proactive in communicating with my immediate colleagues and family, focusing more on outcomes and spending quality time with my family.
What acts of kindness have you seen or shown that have made you smile recently?
I was able to assist a family by providing moral and financial support during this difficult time and this has given me so much to smile about.
What has this crisis taught you – both professionally and on a personal level?
On a personal level, it has taught me to be more grateful, appreciative and to keep reaching out to others by showing love in any little way. On a professional level, it has taught me never to take my colleagues for granted. From the little interactions to the learning and development on the job.
How are you trying to stay happy and healthy?
I try to stay happy and healthy by reflecting on all the good positive achievements, creating time to relax, reading and eating healthy even though exercising still poses a challenge.
